At Visionary Optical, we are dedicated to providing the best children’s optometry services in Perth.

We will ensure your child receives a high standard of care from our experienced team of Optometrists and Dispensers. Children’s vision develops rapidly from birth to age six so regular eye tests are essential to ensure your child’s eyes are healthy. We perform eye tests on children of all ages, providing continuous care from early childhood onwards.

What to Expect?

During your child’s eye test we use age-appropriate testing methods and state-of-the-art equipment. Our optometrists can check the clarity of your child’s vision using charts with letters, numbers or pictures and a refraction will reveal if a prescription is required.

We will also assess your child’s binocular vision and eye movements using eye catching targets. Finally, your child will have a full assessment of the health of the front and back of their eyes.

The optometrist will then discuss findings with you and give you a chance to ask any questions. Management and treatments may include glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises or myopia management.

If glasses are required, one of our experienced dispensers will help guide your child to find a pair of glasses they feel comfortable and confident in.

Myopia Management

Myopia, or short sightedness is a condition which causes blurred vision in the distance. This is caused by the eye becoming too long, meaning light cannot be focused on the retina correctly. This is becoming more and more common due to environmental and lifestyle changes in the world today. Myopia generally starts in late childhood/early teens and worsens over time which is one reason why regular eye tests are so important for children.

Here at Visionary, we can prescribe special spectacle lenses and contact lenses which can help prevent onset and slow progression of myopia. Our optometrists can also prescribe low dose atropine drops if your child is suitable which can also reduce myopia progression.

Taking a proactive approach to myopia management means you can decrease the risk of your child requiring a high prescription and can also decrease their risks of developing associated eye conditions like retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy. We will help you and your child explore your options and find the best solution for you.

How Will I Know my Child Needs an Eye Test

Good vision is essential for children’s educational, physical, and social development so we recommend regular eye exams starting in kindergarten. Often, it’s difficult for parents to detect vision problems in children as they may not report issues with their eyes.

Common signs of vision difficulties include frequent eye rubbing or blinking, clumsiness, headaches, and avoiding close tasks like reading. Ensuring early detection and treatment can support your child’s overall growth and success

What are Some Common Visual Issues in Children?

Farsightedness (Hyperopia): Trouble seeing things up close.

Nearsightedness (Myopia): Difficulty seeing distant objects.

Astigmatism: Blurred vision caused by an irregular cornea.

Strabismus (Crossed Eyes): Misalignment of the eyes, which can lead to amblyopia (lazy eye).
